I hope this latest newsletter, finds you and your family well and safe.
The world continues to change as we have learned to live with Coronavirus for most of 2020. We have alumni living abroad for many years, some of whom have returned to Australia whilst others have not, but we hope you and your families remain positive wherever you are, as life returns to some form of ‘normal’, the new normal, whatever that will be.
This newsletter is filled with details about many wonderful simchas celebrated in spite of COVID-19, interviews with two alumni and school-related news we thought you might like to know about. We are so grateful for digital technology such as Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp and other online communications, that have allowed us to stay connected with loved ones and others, no matter whether they live next door, in the next suburb or on the other side of the world.
We welcome our youngest Emanuel graduates to our alumni association, the Class of 2020. They have certainly experienced a final year of school like no other. One member of this cohort is Ethan de Melo whose mum, Claudia Maman, was part of the first Year 12 graduating year here in 1989. She said: “I found it rather surreal dropping Ethan at school for his graduation and thinking I was part of the first graduating year. I really reminisced about how the School has grown and how my son is about to be an alum, just like me! These young adults have certainly had an unusual pathway to graduation from School – a very different Final Assembly and likewise their Graduation Dinner but in spite of this, they have lots of fond memories of these milestones”.
We wish mazal tov to Ariel Berger (Class of 2020) whose HSC Major Artwork, A Family Lunch will be included in this year’s Virtual ArtExpress Exhibition. This is an outstanding achievement.
At this stage, all alumni reunions in 2021 will have to be online – reunions are a wonderful opportunity to catch up with your peers and some of your teachers too, and having these events on Zoom will allow those of you who live interstate and/or overseas to join in as well. It’s not too late to organise your reunion if a date hasn’t already been set for your Year group. Please refer to the side panel for a schedule of reunions for 2021.
We thank the alumni who have been part of our very successful Careers Space event for Year 11 and 12 students over the past four years, and were all disappointed that we had to cancel our 2020 event but we are now planning for next year. We hope the 30+ alumni who were to be part of this year’s event will be available for 2021 and will be in touch again once we know more about how we will be able to hold such events. If you are interested in joining us to talk about your journey since finishing school, please let us know.
